Addiction and

Substance Abuse

Our understanding of Addiction continues to grow and change. With it, so too do our definitions of Addiction and our considerations of prevalence. While Substance Abuse refers to excessive use of a Substance, we can form Addictions to just about anything from Heroin to Shopping, from Work to Video Games. Simply put, if you demonstrate a pattern of obsessively engaging in a behavior despite significant negative consequences, you may be struggling with some form of addiction.

Not sure if you are experiencing "negative consequences"? This term refers to struggles in multiple areas of your life as a result of your behavior. For example, you might find that your fighting with your Family and Friends, you may have begun to feel estranged from them. You could be struggling to perform at work or school. You might have lost your job, or may not be motivated to look for one because of your need to spend time on your addiction. Maybe you are no longer engaging in fun activities not related to your addiction, that you used to enjoy.  You may also be experiencing Financial Difficulties.

The process of Addiction can unravel the life you have built. Regardless of the severity of what you are struggling with, there are resources out there to help you.
